The New Direction
During 2008 Taylor Woodrow merged with Wimpey to create Taylor Wimpey, one of the UK’s largest house-building companies. In a move to give the African subsidiary greater independence, Taysec Construction Ltd was divested to the Management Team in Ghana in April 2009 to become simply Taysec.
This is a major milestone in Taysec’s development. Not only has the ownership of the company changed but the whole business model and corporate strategy was transformed to respond to the realities of the construction market in emergent Africa. Management recognised that African construction has come of age since the company began operations 65 years ago. Indigenous companies have grown with capabilities to undertake significant projects. Competent sub-contracting companies have multiplied offering high quality local products such as doors, windows, curtain walling, ceilings and dry walling. Partnering with home grown Ghanaian companies on residential developments has proved highly successful.
Taysec decided to maximise the benefits of its specialist construction experience in Africa by consolidating its self-performing construction activities into a new stream-lined Construction Services Group composed of three companies: Taysec Homes; Taysec Facilities Management; and Taysec Construction. Apart from its own developments and capital construction projects, Taysec has the capability to add value to any project by providing professional services to customers on a project management or project contracting basis.
A new state of the art office was established in the heart of Accra to reflect the new brand values associated with the Group, providing construction services to the highest standard. Under the new management team, the company, whilst being intensely proud of its long-standing history in Ghana, has recognised patterns of change in an ever more confident Ghanaian economy and has modernised to thrive in this environment. These changes represent a vote of confidence in Ghana and an expression of self-confidence in Taysec as an acknowledged leader in African construction expertise.
A TIME OF NEW POTENTIAL
Ghana has achieved one of the strongest performing economies in Africa today. The rapid growth of Ghana’s construction sector owes much to the investment incentives introduced by government and the priority given to removing constraints upon the industry. Taysec is streamlining operations in Ghana for the delivery of complex construction solutions and to provide Design & Build services to meet the full spectrum of client needs. As international attention turns to Ghana’s emergent oil economy, Taysec stands ready to serve clients in this new and exciting sector.
